CONSEQ Terms of Service
These terms cover your use of the CONSEQ iPhone app. Installing or using the app means you accept them. If you do not, do not use it.
1. CONSEQ is not medical care
This comes first because it matters most.
CONSEQ is not a medical device, not therapy, and not a substitute for professional care. It does not diagnose anything, it does not treat anything, and it makes no claim about your health. The questions it asks at the start are CONSEQ's own, written to work out what to say to you next. They are not a test, not a rating and not an assessment of any kind. Nothing the app shows you is medical advice.
If you are in crisis or at risk of harming yourself, contact your local emergency services or a crisis line. In the US you can call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline).
2. What CONSEQ does
You set rules for your own phone. The app restricts the phone accordingly and keeps a record of how you are doing against those rules. Your habit records and blocking settings stay on that phone. Versions with Superwall also process subscription and technical analytics as described in our privacy policy.
Using Apple's Screen Time systems, and only with access you grant, the app can:
- Filter out sites meant for adults, in every browser on the phone.
- Block apps and categories you pick.
- Apply a daily time limit you set to any of those apps.
- Stop apps being deleted, if you switch that on. See section 5.
The rest of the app is a set of tasks to do when you want to ride out an urge, a log of what you did, a set of daily habits, and a day count. One of the tasks uses the camera and another uses the phone's motion sensor. Camera frames and motion readings are processed on the phone and are not saved or uploaded. The privacy policy explains that in full.
There is no account, no social feature and no advertising. Some of the app is behind a subscription, which section 3 sets out.
3. The subscription
CONSEQ offers an auto-renewing subscription in two lengths. Both belong to the same subscription group, so you hold one of them at a time.
- conseq, yearly at $49.99 per year, with a free trial of three days for Apple Accounts that are still eligible for one.
- conseq, weekly at $4.99 per week.
Those are the United States prices. The price you are charged is the one your own storefront shows on the plan screen inside the app, in your own currency, and that screen is the one to read before you buy.
What the subscription covers is the app itself: your plan, the barriers, the panic tasks, the log, the marks and the habits. It is not a charge for using Apple's Screen Time controls, which are part of iOS and free.
Some facts about how it works, all of them Apple's rules rather than ours:
- Payment is taken by your Apple Account when you confirm the purchase.
- It renews automatically at the end of each period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before that period ends.
- If you take the free trial and do not cancel at least 24 hours before it ends, it turns into a paid yearly subscription at the price shown.
- Cancel in your App Store settings. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription, and neither does erasing everything inside the app.
- An unused part of a free trial is lost if you buy a subscription during it.
- Refunds are handled by Apple under Apple's own terms, not by us.
- The plan screen has a Restore control, which brings back a subscription this Apple Account already holds, for instance on a new phone.
Versions with Superwall use it to display the subscription screen and measure subscription activity. Apple still processes purchases and manages billing. Our privacy policy describes the information processed by these services.
Prices can change. The plan screen inside the app always shows the current one.
4. Who can use it
You must be 18 or older. The app is rated 18+ and is not intended for children.
CONSEQ runs on iPhone only, in portrait, and needs iOS 18 or later. Your iPhone must have a passcode set, because iOS will not grant Screen Time access to a phone without one. The app never sees that passcode.
5. What the app cannot promise
Two limits worth stating plainly, because the app is only honest if you know them.
The restrictions are friction, not a cage. CONSEQ blocks content using Apple's Screen Time system with your own authorization. You can revoke that authorization in the iOS Settings app at any time, which clears every restriction the app applied. The app cannot prevent that. Nothing here will stop a determined person from getting around it.
Do not rely on CONSEQ as the only safeguard for anything that matters.
One restriction reaches further than the apps you picked. If you switch on the setting that stops apps being deleted, iOS applies it to the whole phone. While it is on, no app on the phone can be deleted. Not only CONSEQ, and not only the ones you chose to block. Apple's system offers no narrower version of it. You turn it off by erasing CONSEQ from inside the app, or by taking Screen Time access away in the iOS Settings app.
6. Acceptable use
Do not use CONSEQ to do anything unlawful, and do not use it to get around a restriction someone else set for you rather than one you set for yourself.
You are given a personal licence to use CONSEQ on devices you own. Do not copy it, sell it, rent it out, take it apart, or build something else out of it. Everything in the app stays ours.
CONSEQ does not require an app account. We may stop offering the app or change it in a later version, and Apple can act under its own terms.
7. No warranty
CONSEQ is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, merchantability, and noninfringement. We do not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted, that it will be free of errors, or that it will help you achieve any particular outcome.
8. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, CONSEQ is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss arising from a restriction that was or was not applied, or from a return to the habit you were trying to leave, however caused. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid for the app in the twelve months before the claim.
Nothing in these terms limits liability for fraud, or for anything that cannot lawfully be limited.
9. Ending it
You can stop using CONSEQ at any time by erasing everything from within the app and then deleting the app. To erase: open the Settings tab, scroll to the bottom, and tap Erase everything and start over. That lifts every restriction the app applied and returns it to how it was the first time you opened it.
Erase first. If the setting that stops apps being deleted is on, you will not be able to delete CONSEQ until it is lifted.
If you have a subscription, cancel it separately in your App Store settings. Erasing and deleting do not cancel it.
We may discontinue the app at any time.
10. Changes to these terms
If these terms change materially we will update the date at the top and note the change in the app's release notes. Continuing to use the app after that means you accept the revised terms.
11. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the United States and of the State of New Jersey, without regard to conflict of law rules. Any dispute arising from them belongs in the state or federal courts sitting in New Jersey, and you and we both agree to that. Nothing here removes any right you have under the mandatory consumer protection laws of the place you live.
12. App Store
These terms are between you and CONSEQ only, not with Apple, and CONSEQ alone is responsible for the app and its content.
Apple has no obligation to provide any maintenance or support for the app. If the app fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price if you paid one; to the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation with respect to the app. CONSEQ, not Apple, is responsible for addressing any claim relating to the app, including product liability claims, any claim that the app fails to conform to a legal or regulatory requirement, and claims arising under consumer protection or similar legislation. CONSEQ, not Apple, is responsible for investigating and defending any claim by anyone else that the app infringes intellectual property rights.
By using the app you represent that you are not located in a country subject to a US Government embargo or designated as a "terrorist supporting" country, and that you are not listed on any US Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
Apple and its subsidiaries are third party beneficiaries of these terms and, upon your acceptance, have the right to enforce them against you.
